CRI Middleware began offering "CRI SpursCoder," a console-base video encode tool, as of November 26. The encode tool is free for personal uses only, requiring separate talks with the company for commercial uses.
CRI SpursCoder is a video encoding tool for Toshiba's stream processor, SpursEngine. It allows to encode video streams based on MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec specification at high speed on a PC equipped with SpursEngine.
Previously, CRI Middleware already disclosed they were working on "CRI Sofdec for SpursEngine," a video codec library supporting SpursEngine. This new tool is their command-base implementation of the library, released broadly towards general users.
Video editing tools generally available on the market allow even users without the knowledge of video encoding to cut, edit, or add menus comparatively easily with default settings. They also allow to specify parameters for encoding through the graphical user interface.
On the other hand, encoding tools with command line interface require the users to specify parameters for H.264 or MPEG-2 encoding, such as the resolution and bit rate, as the command line options. In that sense, CRI SpursCoder is an encoding tool towards experienced users familiar with video encoding techniques.
By the way, CRI Middleware, as a SpursEngine partner, is scheduled to join a PC event, "SpursEngine Start-up!” hosted by Toshiba at Caffe Solare LinuxCaffe in Akihabara, Tokyo, on Saturday, December 6. Also expected to participate in this event, in addition to CRI Middleware, are: Leadtek Research Japan who recently released a SpursEngine board, WinFast PxVC1100; Thomson Canopus who just launched FIRECODER Blu, another SpursEngine board; CyberLink, and Pegasys, who both are video editing software vendors, among other SpursEngine partner companies.
