Released in Leadtek's presentation at DIY PC Expo 2008 Autumn

Leadtek Research Inc. gave a seminar presentation on WinFast PxVC1100, a video accelerator card equipped with SpursEngine at DIY PC Expo 2008 Autumn, an event for do-it-yourself PC users, held in Akihabara, Tokyo, on Monday, November 3 (Figure 1). In the seminar, Mr. Naoki Kaneko, Project Manager, at Audio/Video Communication Product BU, Leadtek, stated their plans to expand application software supporting SpursEngine in accordance with CRI Middleware and other vendors (Figure 2).

Leadtek mainly displayed WinFast PxVC1100 and bare born PC featuring the card in their booth. After all, in this DIY PC Expo, Leadtek successfully appealed to the visitors about "the new world of the video editing" realized by HD video accelerator with both the demo and presentation, prior to the product release on the 14th of this month.

WinFast PxVC1100 is a video accelerator card supporting full-HD (1920 x 1080) and is equipped with a SpursEngine SE1000 chip, Toshiba's stream processor. The interface is PCI-Express x1. Bundled tools are: DVD MovieWriter 5, DVD authoring software; WinDVD 8, a DVD player; and Ulead VideoStudio11 Plus, video editing software, all of which are by Corel Corp. These pieces of software allow editing HD video, SD-to-HD video upconversion ("Super Resolution"), transcoding, and creating DVD/AVCHD discs.

Mr. Kaneko said, "With WinFast PxVC1100 installed, it is possible to easily perform such heavy HD video processing at high-speed even on a PC with a dual core CPU. No expensive PC with a cutting-edge, quad core CPU is needed." (Figure 3) As to specific benchmark, he showed some test results that the processing time with SpursEngine was one-fifth to one-sixth of and CPU load was about 40 to 45 percent less than that of Core 2 Duo Only (Penryn 2.53GHz). He also added that the CPU load performance was improved, even better than the slide shown, with the latest software update (Figure 4).

Also mentioned about was CRI Sofdec by CRI Middleware, who was demonstrating jointly at Leadtek's booth. Explained Mr. Kaneko, "SpursEngine chip on the WinFast PxVC1100 card allows to transcode in H.264 a lot at low cost. The current version with character user interface allows to specify such parameters as bit rate, profile, level, IDR picture period, periods of I picture and B picture, resolution, and so forth (Figure 5).

As to the future plans, "We would like to increase application software supporting SpursEngine by actively encouraging application developers to use CRI Middleware's video processing middleware and develop applications for consumers," said Mr. Kaneko. Lastly, Mr. Kaneko concluded his speech by stating that Leadtek would like more people to experience the new world of HD video editing realized by SpursEngine.
